I have mixed feelings for Star One.
I did a refinance on my house with Star One back in 2008 just before the market tanked. It took more than 45 days to close, and the loan officer assigned to my refinance, was rude and unhelpful, and apparently made mistakes on my loan docs. Luckily we caught the mistakes (yes, they were major ones - e.g. rate term and actual rate!) on the day of the signoff. So if we were still in 2008, I would give only 2 stars.
However, that being said, generally, Star One does offer very good mortgage rates, and below average closing costs, comparable to PenFed Credit Union, and they are local in the bay area, which is a plus.
I never had a problem when I go into their Credit Union in Sunnyvale. Their staff is always friendly and very helpful there.
Just recently, as the mortgage rates tanked, Star One allowed a rate modification to happen, which means if you qualify (you need to call to find out if you do), they will send you a document to adjust your rate, without need to re-appraise or check your financial status. It's a painless process that takes 7-10 business days. They do charge an amount between $500 and $1000 depending on the amount of your loan, but it's still less than a true refinance, and less headaches too. I was very impressed by their customer service for this and for them to offer a rate modification voluntarily, since their loans are not under Obama's refinance plan (i.e., not owned by Fannie Mae or Freddic Mac). For this I would give 5 stars, since this is a life-saver.

I have always liked this place, especially now that they have a branch closer to where I live in Cupertino. I have enjoyed their services even though it used to be limited (credit union). Or perhaps now that I know how to better use their services I enjoy them better or maybe it's just my lack of experience with them (haven't quite enjoyed their car loan services as of yet). Either which way, I like them.
